I decided to republish this article that I wrote in 2022 because having a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and focus is still very important.
Why a STEM education is important for your business
Today there is more focus on the specific academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). According to the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics[1] STEM related employment occupations are expected to grow by 10.4% through 2033.
If you or your child has a passion for science and math, that may be an indication that you have an interest in engineering, technology, scientific or math related careers. A STEM education is designed to encourage team work, innovation, problem solving and creativity.
Keep in mind that the skillsets related to team work, innovation and problem solving will help you if your focus is also on the strategic, leadership and financial areas.
Careers related to a STEM Education
As we look at the jobs, a significant amount of the well paid jobs will be in areas such as the technology, engineering, and medical sectors. Consider that those who take advantage of a STEM curriculum will gain an excellent launching pad for enhanced career path.
We are starting to see more jobs and careers that are STEM related. Jobs related to areas such as electric vehicle development, energy generation construction and operations, manufacturing and rebuilding of our overall infrastructure including bridges and roads.
As you can see over the past few years, The medical industry will continue to have significant demands and as such our nurses, doctors, technicians and other personnel who provide health care will still be in demand.
Keep in mind that the focus on team work, innovation and problem solving will also help to be better prepared for the strategic, leadership and financial areas.
Using STEM learning for business.
I worked as a mechanical engineer for a number of years in the energy generation field. My colleagues included welders, engineers, electricians, chemists, materials scientist and personnel with project management and construction expertise. They are well trained at working with teams, and excelled at problem solving.
I see a real advantage for ensuring that students have a sound foundation in the STEM disciplines. I was able to use my analytical and problem solving skills to help with focusing on engineering, project management, strategy, financials and analytics. This passion for helping businesses continues today.
